The charter of the education committee is to actively pursue the educational aspects of the engineering profession, with emphasis on mentoring, student scholarships and continued professional development of its membership. On this webpage, we focus on student scholarships and science fair awards, all of which are designed to encourage the next generation to pursue rewarding careers in engineering, science, and architecture.
It is the intent of the Kittyhawk Post to grant scholarships annually to encourage students to pursue careers in the fields of engineering, science, architecture and engineering management. The program is designed to cover all levels of post-high-school education to include associate, baccalaureate, and graduate degrees. The number and value of scholarships awarded may vary from year to year, but the goal is to award at least one scholarship in each of the categories outlined below.
The Kittyhawk Post awarded a total of $11,000 in scholarships this year at the June membership meeting. The awards were presented to eight outstanding high school seniors and college students from the local area who are studying engineering, science, or architecture. At the meeting, a check for $1000 to fund the Sinclair Scholarship was also presented to Dr. Nick Scambilis, who will award the money to a deserving Sinclair engineering student.
Four of our sustaining member firms, LJB, Woolpert, Four Seasons Environmental, and Barge, Waggoner, Sumner & Cannon, continued their generosity by funding corporate scholarships that were awarded in their names. The scholarship fund also benefited from funds raised at last year’s Golf Tournament, which allowed us to award four General Barnes scholarships.
The competition was extremely keen, with over 40 outstanding students applying for the merit-based scholarships. The remarkable accomplishments of this year’s scholars may be read at: Winner accomplishments.ppt
The Post extends sincere thanks to our sustaining member firms and fundraiser participants for their generous support—and congratulations to these young scholars.

Science Fair
Each year the Kittyhawk Post presents two awards at the West District Science Day. One award is given for the best environmental science project. This environmental award is dedicated in memory of Eric Su Yong, son of Lt Col (Retired) and Mrs. Mark Goltz. The second award is presented for the best engineering project.
West District Science Day was held at Central State University, Wilberforce, Ohio on Saturday, 15 March 2008. The Eric Su Yong Goltz Environmental Award was won by Michael Rarick, an 8th grader at Dayton Christian Middle School. Michael’s project was titled “Harnessing the Energy of Wind.” Ben Pifher, also an 8th grader, from Mechanicsburg Exempted Village School, was the winner of the Engineering Award for the best engineering project, titled “Why Winglets?” Both winners and their families attended the April Post meeting where they presented their projects and received their awards, $200 savings bonds. Congratulations!
