2006 Scholarship Winners

Spencer Bowen was selected as the recipient of the Barnes scholarship and was awarded $2000 to help with his college expenses.

Spencer is a senior at Centerville High School where he ranked number 1 in a class of 683.  Spencer is a key member of Centerville’s award-winning Science Olympiad, Science Bowl, Matchwits, Knowledge master, and Quiz Bowl teams.  He is a talented musician, playing in the marching, jazz, symphonic, and pep bands.  Spencer is a member of the National Honor Society and the Spanish National Honor Society, and he is an AP Scholar with Distinction as well as a National Merit Finalist.  Spencer is planning to study engineering at Brigham Young University next year.  Spencer’s father, Lt Col Mark Bowen, is a program manager at the Air Force Research Laboratory on Wright-Patterson Air Force Base Ohio.

Caroline Scacca was awarded the Barge Waggoner Sumner & Cannon scholarship, worth $1000.  Caroline is a first-year biology honors student (minoring in honors physics) at Miami University, where she carries a 3.82 GPA.   She is captain of her intramural soccer team, a member of the pre-med honor society, and a volunteer for the Make-a-Wish Foundation.  Caroline plans to become an orthodontist and dental researcher.  Her father, Louis Scacca, is a retired Air Force officer and is a physicist at the Air Force Research Laboratory at Wright-Patterson AFB.

Irene Brockman won the $1000 Woolpert scholarship.  Irene has a perfect 4.0 GPA as a chemical engineering sophomore at the University of Michigan.  She is a member of the Campus Philharmonic and volunteers as a mentor for entering engineering freshmen, as well as helping as a conversation circle leader at the English Language Institute.   She is active in the Society of Women Engineers, serving as a member of the logistics committee.  Irene is also Vice President of the university’s Shipman Scholarship Speaker Series.  For the past two summers, Irene has worked at Wright Patterson AFB’s Air Force Research Laboratory.

Curtis Sinewe was awarded the $1000 Four Seasons Environmental scholarship.  Curtis is a senior at Centerville High School, where he is in the top 4% of his class.  He plays in the jazz band drum line and is a drum line captain.  He is a member of the National Honor Society and serves as a math and science faculty assistant.  Curtis also volunteers as a peer tutor and a chem buddy.  In 2003, Curtis was awarded a scholarship by the Kittyhawk Post so that he could attend the Society of American Military Engineers’ Summer Camp.  Next year, Curtis plans to begin studies in Chemical Engineering at the University of Toledo.  He also plans to enroll in the Air Force ROTC program there.

Angela Holmen was a second-time recipient of the LJB Scholarship, worth $1000, which she also was awarded last year.  Angela is currently a Chemical Engineering major at the University of Dayton, where she maintains a 3.97 GPA. She is a member of the University's Symphonic Wind Ensemble, Horn Choir, Horn quartet, and Orchestra. She is also a pianist for the Memorial Baptist Church Children's choir and plays in the Church Worship Band.  She is a member of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers and is the UD Chapter President of the Society of Women Engineers. Angela is the daughter of Tim and Connie Holmen. Mr. Holmen is a retired Air Force Officer with three previous assignments at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base.

The Curtis scholarship, which comes with a $1000 award, was presented to A1C Barrett K. Harber, who works as a Scientific and Technical Electronic Intelligence Analyst at the National Air and Space Intelligence Center.   Airman Harber is attending school at Wright State University where he maintains a 4.0 GPA while studying electrical engineering.  Airman Harber is a volunteer member of Airmen Against Drunk Driving.

Science Fair

Each year the Kittyhawk Post presents two awards at the West District Science Day. One award is given for the best environmental science project. This environmental award is dedicated in memory of Eric Su Yong, son of Lt Col (Retired) and Mrs. Mark Goltz. The second award is presented for the best engineering project.

West District Science Day was held at Central State University, Wilberforce, Ohio on Saturday, 18 March 2006. The Eric Su Yong Goltz Environmental Award was won by Erin Pinnell, a 7th grader at St. Luke School, for her project “This Project Stinks” which looked at ammonia generation in stables.   John Moore IV, a 12th grader at Dayton Christian High School, won the engineering award for his project “Development of Fixed and Flapping-Wing Microair Vehicles”.  Each winner received a $200 savings bond.  Congratulations!

GEM Award

The Post annually presents an award to the graduate of the Air Force Institute of Technology's Graduate Engineering Management (GEM) Program who best exemplifies academic achievement, leadership, and character. The 2006 award winner was Capt Ryan A. Crowley. Congratulations!

AFIT Capt Ryan Crowley, who received his masters degree in AFIT’s Graduate Engineering Management (GEM) Program in March, received the SAME award, which is presented to the student in the GEM Program who demonstrates superior scholarship, outstanding leadership, character and initiative.  Presenting the award is Dr. Mark Goltz, Chair of the Kittyhawk Post’s education committee, as Col Robert Kopp, Post President, and Capt Crowley’s father, Col (ret) Francis Crowley, look on.
